To strengthen our muscles we exercise, we lift weights, we keep active. But how do we strengthen our teeth?
Our team of experienced dentists at Tindale Dental Center in Penrith know that maintaining good oral health by brushing and flossing twice daily is a great place to start. What we eat also directly impacts the health of our teeth and gums. Our teeth play an integral role in the process of food digestion which means we need to strengthen and take care of them.
Food Facts:
Protein
Meat, eggs, tofu, beans, nuts and green leafy vegetables like spinach and broccoli are all foods high in protein. Protein is required by our bodies to build and repair tissue. Protein also helps balance the PH levels in the mouth and discourages bacteria growth.
Calcium
Some dairy foods (check the labels) like milk and cheese, are high in calcium. Other non dairy foods like soy, sesame seeds, tofu, nuts, fish (particularly those where you eat the bones eg: sardines) are also good sources of calcium.
Vitamin D
Foods rich in Vitamin D like tuna, salmon, cheese and egg yolk help the body to absorb calcium. The absorption of calcium aids in the development of tooth enamel. Enamel is the hard outer surface layer of teeth that protects each tooth from decay. Strong enamel = strong teeth.
Vitamin C
Foods rich in Vitamin C like grapefruit, oranges, kiwi fruit and strawberries help to kill off most of the acid-creating bacteria that may be present on the surface of each tooth. Vitamin C helps to maintain the overall mouth health.
Tea
Teas naturally contain fluoride. In addition to brushing your teeth with toothpaste that contains fluoride, many teas also contain this natural mineral. Fluoride assists with preventing decay and improving the overall health of your teeth.
Water
Mouthwashes are designed to remove bacteria in the mouth, however water is also effective for this task. Rinsing after eating and brushing is recommended and drinking your daily recommended requirement also helps to improve to keep your skin looking good and hydrated, your muscles energised and your kidneys to function properly.
Raw fruits and vegetables
Eating healthy foods that require a lot of chewing – like raw carrots, apples, cucumbers and pears can aid in strengthening your teeth. All the chewing acts to disrupt the growth of bacteria and plaque and aids in the cleansing of your teeth and gums.
All of these food tips, combined with brushing and flossing your teeth twice each day will benefit your overall oral health and improve the strength of your teeth.
